Why Star Cricket is showing football?

News channels airing comedy shows or bollywood promotions are not uncommon scenes in India. But a cricket channel telecasting football seems a bit strange.
Ongoing season of English Premier League is being aired on Star Cricket and Star Cricket HD at the moment along with Star Sports with Hindi and English commentary. Strange though it may seem, it is well thought out coverage plan of Star Sports Network.

Star Sports Network has put up EPL with Hindi feed for sampling on Star Cricket

Star Cricket has better distribution than any other Star Sports Network channel, as India is a cricket crazy nation and a cricket channel with ample live action does need to worry about its distribution. And it is this knowledge that has inspired sportscaster Star Sports, which has three non-cricket standard definition channels and one non-cricket HD channel, to air football on a cricket channel. EPL has been put up for the sampling on Star Cricket with its Hindi feed. Once the sampling process is over EPL should be back on non-cricket channels.

Apart from this, Star India has acquired ESPN’s stake in their joint venture ESPNStar (ESPN Software Private Ltd). ESPN is about to get a new look and name once the formalities are over. They do not want to air one of their prime properties i.e. EPL on a channel which is awaiting renaming and relaunching.  Why should they promote an outgoing brand by airing big tournaments such as EPL and cricket matches?

India has some 54.52 million DTH subscribes, 70% of them live in rural and small town India. Most DTH homes subscribe to the channel which is broadcasting India's cricket series. Sports channels earn substantial share of their revenues from subscriptions, more than any other genre. That’s why, the sportscaster is betting big on Hindi and on a cricket channel.

Star Sports Network is to air nearly 100 English Premier League matches with on-ground Hindi commentary of weekend matches; earlier it had experimented with off-ground commentary in 2006.The focus on Hindi will also be seen in the non-live programming so that first-time football viewers can understand the nuances of the game and get familiar with football clubs.
