In the times when Star has
been on a buying spree Zee owned Ten Sports has kept their purses tight. It
almost look like a complete knock out by Star.
But wait, if media reports are to be believed Subhash Chandra
is planning a return to the cricket pitch with Lalit Modi. Reacting to
these media reports Lalit Modi tweeted
I wish @_SubhashChandra all the best in this new venture. I have nothing to do with it. But we need a rival body - http://t.co/TShcsySVXX

Earlier the
International Cricket Council (ICC) launched an urgent investigation after
reports of Zee group began registering companies in the names of cricket
boards.
A
report in ‘The Guardian’ said that the matter of the registration of website
domain names, including worldcricketcouncil.co.in, by an employee of the
broadcaster Ten Sports, was discussed during last week’s ICC board meeting in Dubai .
At the same time, a number of website domain names, which include cricketassociationofengland.co.in and other variants have been registered, with their origin traced back to a senior IT manager at Ten Sports.
Chandra has long wanted to disrupt the
cricket economy. Running a fleet of sports channels under Ten Sports. There are
also some reports of Ten Sports getting complete make over later this year.
Ten
Sports does not have the rights to telecast international cricket played in India which
is with Star, and the IPL which is with Multi Screen Media (MSM). Star also has
the rights to show international matches played in Australia and England .
Chandra’s TV rights extend to the five boards – South
Africa , West
Indies , Pakistan , Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe .
With the changed power
scenario in New Delhi Subhash Chandra could throw up a challenge to the power
structure enjoyed by Srini-Pawar group.
After India ’s
early exit in Cricket World Cup 2007 and losing BCCI broadcasting rights to
Nimbus Chandra launched domestic Indian Cricket League in 2007 which ended its
innings in 2009.
Incidentally,
same Lalit Modi was at the forefront of the kill ICL campaign of the BCCI. As
the IPL commissioner then, he was obviously opposed to Chandra creating a T20
league. But this time it looks like a bigger pitch, a challenge to the ICC.
